Booking your appointment to give blood
All blood donation across Scotland is by appointment only. Appointments are bookable eight weeks prior to the session date by calling 0345 90 90 999, or through your online donor account.
What is the online donor account?
An online donor account allows donors to make, view and cancel blood donation appointments. You can also use it to update a number of personal details, including your address.
To book your appointment online, you'll need to create an online donor account. You can do this by looking in the top right corner of the website and clicking the blue 'Register' button.
Alternatively, if you already have an account, simply click the red 'Log in' button (this will appear as a red padlock if you are using a mobile or tablet).
Why appointments?
Giving blood by appointment helps us regulate blood stocks to better meet the needs of Scotland’s patients. When you book an appointment, we know hospitals can rely on your blood type on that date, ensuring there will always be enough for patients when needed.
Giving blood by appointment also assists with current Covid-19 social distancing measures.
How far in advance can I book an appointment?
Appointments are bookable eight weeks in advance of the session.
This means that we can look at the stock levels across all our blood groups and invite the correct number of each group to the forthcoming session. Making sure we have six days stock of each of the eight blood types is our priority and this system allows us to do just that.
When booking online, you may see scheduled sessions for later on in the year in your local area. However, these sessions can only be booked six weeks prior to the session date. If you try to book an appointment before the 8 week window, a ‘no appointments available’ message will be given.
We will contact you by text if we are particularly in need of your blood group and need you to book your appointment. Additionally, you will also receive your invitation to give blood in the post.
