Covid-19 update: Where are we now?

Share

Following a guidance update from the Scottish Government, from the 16th of May donors attending sessions will no longer be advised to wear a Fluid Resistant Surgical Mask (FRSM) or face covering.

This change of policy is due to a number of factors, including the high uptake of Covid-19 vaccinations, the reduction in severe disease and the continued reduction in hospital admissions with Covid-19 across NHS Scotland.

Donor and staff safety remains a priority and staff follow infection prevention and control measures during donation sessions such as hand hygiene.

Alcohol based hand rub will continue to be available for donor use.

I would still like to wear a face mask or face covering, will this be allowed?

Yes. We understand some donors may still feel more comfortable wearing a face mask or face covering while attending a session to giving blood. However, if you choose to wear a face mask or face covering, we will ask you to remove it as part of our medical health screening and while you’re on the bed giving blood. This is to make sure we can monitor you if you begin to feel unwell during the donation.
