Inspired by his Grandad, Josh motivates a new generation of blood donors.

Stirling University student, Josh Wood has found a way to connect with his grandad while saving and improving the lives of others. Together, they’ve turned blood donation into a family tradition with a mission.

Josh was inspired by his 75-year-old grandad, Robert Smith, who has donated an incredible 127 times. “My grandad’s unwavering generosity and selflessness are qualities I’m so grateful to have grown up around. It can often be hard to make time to spend with loved ones. Arranging appointments alongside my grandpa gives us the chance to not only spend quality time together but to also do something meaningful while we are at it.’

For Robert, the post-donation KitKat is a favourite treat, while Josh opts for a Tunnocks Teacake. But beyond the snacks, it’s the knowledge that they’re helping others that keeps them coming back.

“When I first donated blood in 2020, it was because my grandad encouraged me. He’s always spoken so positively about his experiences,”. Now, Josh is taking that enthusiasm to university, where he’s joined the Bloody Brilliant University Squad (BBUS) at the University of Stirling to encourage other young people to roll up their sleeves.

The Stirling BBUS, part of the charity Give Blood 4 Good (GB4G), has already made an impact. Their November blood drive welcomed 68 donors, 40 of whom were brand new donors giving their first donation. “It’s a simple act that can save lives and going with a friend or loved one can make the experience even better.”

For Josh, the goal is to shatter the myths that might deter young people from donating. “It’s quick, painless, and incredibly rewarding. We plan to organise more university blood drives in 2025, targeting sports clubs and societies to help boost donor numbers.’

When asked what he’d say to someone considering their first donation, Josh is clear: “Take the plunge. Every single donation makes a real difference. And if you’re nervous, the staff are so supportive—they’ll guide you through every step.”

SNBTS representative Fiona Shields highlights the impact of young ambassadors:
"I first met Josh when he came to donate blood with his grandad, Robert, at the Ayr community session. It has been a pleasure to watch Josh grow as a give blood ambassador, embracing his family values and leading the Blood Brilliant Uni Squad at Stirling University. His dedication and support during the university session were invaluable, directly contributing to an increase in first-time donors at Stirling. We are deeply grateful to both Josh and Robert for their ongoing support."
