Scotland needs blood donors now as World Cup approaches
As Scotland prepares to take to the world stage at the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) is urging people across the country to take action off the pitch by giving blood now.
SNBTS warns that blood donations can fall sharply during major sporting moments. When Scotland qualified for the tournament, donor attendance dropped by more than 20 per cent on the night of the thrilling final against Denmark.
Debbie McNaughton, SNBTS Associate Director, Donor Services and Transport explains, 'It may sound counter-intuitive that we are talking about the World Cup 40 days before it starts, but less than two per cent of Scotland’s population currently donates blood. This leaves Scotland with a shortage of blood donors at a time when resilience is vital. To combat this, we need new donors to come forward now.
'SNBTS aims to maintain five to seven days' supply of all eight main blood groups, but during major national events like the World Cup, keeping those levels becomes more challenging. Hospitals across Scotland rely on around 450 blood donors every single day to meet patient demand. Blood has a shelf life of just 35 days, meaning regular donations are essential to keep supplies stable. This won't change simply because the football is keeping everyone busy.'
We are asking you to help by taking part in our Yes Sir, I'm a Donor! campaign:
- Why not recruit some friends and give blood as a group? Sign up as a blood donor – and encourage others to do the same.
- Return as a blood donor if you have not given for a long time – we’d love to welcome you back.
- If you are a regular donor, please do book your appointment so we know we can rely on you.
- Share our messaging with your social media followers, and display your electronic 'Yes Sir! I'm a Donor' profile pic with pride. You can do this by downloading the 'I'm a donor' image below; or alternatively by adding our twibbon to a profile pic of your choice at twb.nz/yessirimadonor
Debbie concludes, 'By giving blood now you’re giving patients in Scotland the strongest start through the World Cup period. Please do say Yes Sir, I'm a Donor!'
